Édouard Manet “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe” (1862-3) on display at the Musée d’Orsay. In Manet’s original picnic painting, food appears as an afterthought. A basket like a cornucopia spills bread and fruit in the front left corner of the canvas, but all eyes are on the nude figure offered up in the center.
